SUMMARY:Ghosts of Ottawa Past
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, October 12th\, and Saturday\, October 13th\, the Reddick Mansion Association will reprise its “Ghosts of Ottawa Past” program with some new and different stories. The guided tour will begin in the East Parlors of the candle-lit Reddick Mansion where participants will “attend” Mr. Reddick’s funeral. After the funeral\, the group will take an approximate quarter-mile outside walk along Columbus and LaSalle Streets. The tour will include the story of the only recorded case of spontaneous combustion in LaSalle County and a stop at the site of the death of the first Ottawa fireman killed in while on duty. During the walk\, other famous and infamous ghostly characters from Ottawa’s past may also appear.\nTwo hours will be given each night: one at 7pm and one at 9pm. After each of the walking tours\, the groups will return to the Reddick Mansion for hot apple cider and refreshments.\nThe cost is $15 per person and\, due to the subject matter\, participants should be at least 12 years old. For reservations\, please call the Reddick Mansion at 815-433-6100 or visit our website\, www.reddickmansion.org. Each tour is limited to 20 people and reservations are strongly suggested. All money raised will be used for the preservation and renovation of the Reddick Mansion. The Reddick Mansion\, at 100 W. Lafayette Street\, built in 1858\, and is listed in the National Register of Historic Sites. It is open to the public for tours and also has meeting/reception rooms available for rent for special events.

SUMMARY:Illinois State Treasurer Rep at Livingston County Health Department for Special Flu Clinic
DESCRIPTION:A representative from the Illinois State Treasurer’s office will be at the Livingston County Health Department for a special flu clinic on Wednesday\, October 17th\, from 7:00am – 1:00pm to help individuals identify any unclaimed property. Come get your flu shot and see if you have any unclaimed property in State of Illinois!\nWalk-in flu clinics are held at the Livingston County Health Department – 310 E Torrance Ave\, Pontiac – Monday through Friday\, 8:00am – 4:00pm. No co-pay will be charged to people presenting their insurance cards (Medicare\, Medicaid\, and most private/employee health insurance plans). State employees and retirees need to present their employee I.D. cards.  Reasonable accommodations will be made for adults with no form of health insurance\nThe CDC recommends everyone 6 months of age and older get the flu vaccine.  People at highest risk of serious flu-related complications include: young children; pregnant women; people with chronic health conditions like asthma\, diabetes\, or heart\, lung and kidney disease; people with weakened immune systems; and people 65 years and older.  People at high risk for serious flu-related complications should make getting vaccinated a priority.  Vaccination is also important for anyone who has close contact with a person at high risk for complications\, or a child younger than 6 months of age.\nFor more information about the seasonal flu vaccine or clinics being conducted by the Livingston County Public Health Department\, call 815-844-7174 or go to the website or Facebook page.

SUMMARY:LaSalle County Health Department’s Flu Clinics
DESCRIPTION:The LaSalle County Health Department is urging everyone 6 months and older to get vaccinated against seasonal influenza (flu).  Seasonal Influenza Vaccine and Influenza HD (High Dose) Vaccine for persons 65 and older will be available. All LaSalle County Health Department influenza vaccines are preservative free. The fee for the seasonal flu shot will be $25. The fee for influenza HD will be $50. Insurance billing will be provided for Medicare part B and Medicaid eligible clients and also for most health insurance companies. You must have your insurance card with you.  No Doctors order is required.  Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.\n \n      The clinic schedule will be as follows:\n         October 18th       from 1:00 – 5:00       LaSalle County Health Department \n         October 25th        from 1:00 – 5:00       LaSalle County Health Department\n         November 15th   from 1:00 – 5:00       LaSalle County Health Department\n \nThe flu vaccine’s effectiveness varies from year to year.  But for those who still get the flu\, the symptoms are milder than in those who have not been immunized.  Influenza HD will be given to persons 65 and older.  Human immune defenses become weaker with age.  Aging decreases the body’s ability to have a good immune response.  A higher dose of protection in the vaccine is added to give older persons a better immune response. This additional protection is intended to create a stronger immune response which will make the vaccine more effective in the elderly.\nTo lessen your chances of developing the flu\, adults and children need to practice good hygiene measures.  Teach the importance of covering your mouth when coughing or sneezing\, and educate children about hand to mucous membrane transmission.  One of the best ways to protect yourself and your children is through frequent and thorough hand washing.  People who are exhibiting “flu-like” symptoms should stay home from work\, out of childcare and school to minimize transmission.\nThis is also a good time for certain individuals to get a pneumonia vaccination.   People who should get a pneumonia shot include: \n\npersons aged 65 and older\nAdults and children with chronic illnesses such as heart\, lung\, kidney\, or liver disease\nDiabetics\nAll persons with a weakened immune system caused by conditions such as HIV\, cancer\, organ transplant\, immunosuppressive medicine\, splenectomy\, or any other chronic condition.\n\nFor those under 65 with a chronic illness it is recommended that it be repeated once after five years. A pneumonia shot is usually necessary only once for those over the age of 65.\nThe pneumonia vaccine will be available at the Health Department flu clinics. For more information on influenza you can call 1-815-433-3366 or you may visit our website at www.lasallecounty.org/hd.  Or like us on Facebook/Twitter.

SUMMARY:Red Cross Blood Donation Opportunities
DESCRIPTION:Red Cross calls for healthy donors to maintain blood supply\nAs influenza activity picks up\, the American Red Cross is urging healthy donors of all blood types to give blood to ensure a strong blood supply for patients in need.\nBlood and platelets can only be given by donors who are feeling well. One way to maintain health is to get a flu vaccine each fall. There is no waiting period to give blood after receiving a flu shot as long as the donor is symptom-free and fever-free.\nStay healthy this flu season and make an appointment to donate blood by downloading the free American Red Cross Blood Donor App\, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).\nDonors of all blood types\, especially type O\, are needed this fall after Hurricanes Michael and Florence forced the cancellation of about 200 blood drives\, causing approximately 7\,000 units of blood and platelets to go uncollected.\n \nUpcoming blood donation opportunities Nov. 1-15\n \nBureau County:\n \nLa Moille\n11/2/2018: 1 p.m. – 6 p.m.\, La Moille High School\, 801 S. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law)\, weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.\nBlood and platelet donors can save time at their next donation by using RapidPass® to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online\, on the day of their donation\, before arriving at the blood drive.
