OGLESBY – This year’s Edible Car Contest at Illinois Valley Community College set the record for most participants. The friendly competition, racing cars built entirely of human edible foods down a timed track, brought around 60 students from schools across North Central Illinois. 34 cars made of foods like squash, cucumbers, and triangular cheese blocks competed in categories like speed, design, most nutritious, and creativity. Organizer and Computer Aided Design Instructor Dorene Data says the event is an opportunity for middle to high school students to take their skills outside the classroom.
Depue High School’s faculty won for the fastest car, Lasagna ala Frutta at .61 seconds. Ottawa High School students took home the award for best high school car and best design with Chew Chew Train, John F Kennedy Junior High won for most nutritious and best middle school car with Dino Fusion.
